A VET from Middlesbrough is taking up the challenge of the London Marathon this Sunday.
Joy Ioannides is gearing up for the 26.2-mile challenge in aid of veterinary charity PDSA, which cares for more than 65,000 animals from its Pet Hospital on Acklam Road in Middlesbrough.
The 25-year-old has a gruelling training programme to help ensure she crosses the finish line within her target time of under five hours and she is hoping animal lovers in the area will sponsor her.
She said: "I’ve been running three times a week and clocking up around 20 miles. I’ve also been swimming and cycling two days a week to help increase my overall fitness. I participated in the Wilmslow Half Marathon earlier this month which was a great experience and has helped me prepare mentally for the big day."
Miss Ioannides, who is hoping to raise £5,000 for the vet charity, said: “I see the huge effect that PDSA has on the lives of pets and their owners every day.
"Pets shouldn’t have to suffer because their owners find themselves in financial hardships and for thousands of owners, PDSA means that they are able to keep their beloved pets, who enrich their lives and provide unconditional love and companionship.”
