MIDDLESBROUGH'S Transporter Bridge was undergoing repairs on Friday after a technical fault.

The 100-year-old bridge's gondola broke down after a gearbox failure.

Specialist engineers were on site to assess the problem and fix a replacement part and the bridge was expected to be back up and running by Saturday.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused to bridge users, and hope to have it back in action before long."

Meanwhile, he said the bridge's glass lift, which opened with a fanfare six months ago, was also open once more. The lift had been closed due to technical teething troubles, but is now in full working order again. The Transporter Bridge visitor centre is also open.

In 2011 to mark the Bridge’s centenary the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) confirmed a £2.6m award for refurbishment and upgrade work to the Tees Transporter Bridge, including the visitor centre and lift.

It means visitors have much easier access to the upper walkway and one of the most unusual vantage points in the town.
