EIGHT people were arrested after "isolated pockets of disorder" at Sunday's Middlesbrough's match against Leeds.

Police said the game was generally good-natured although there were several incidents both inside and outside the ground.

Cleveland Police said it worked hard with the club, local authority and Brittish Transport Police towards a safe, friendly, family atmosphere.

Although a spokesman added: "Unfortunately there will always be a minority who spoil it for others."

A total of eight arrests were made:

  • A man in his 40s from the West Yorkshire area on suspicion of throwing missiles onto the pitch
  • Two teenage boys from the West Yorkshire area on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence
  • A local man in his 30s on suspicion of entering the field of play
  • A man in his 40s from the West Yorkshire area on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence
  • A local man in his late teens on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly
  • A local man in his 30s on suspicion of assault
  • A local man in his 20s on suspicion of a public order offence

Cleveland Police’s Chief Insp Dave Sutherland, match commander, said: “I would like to thank our partners at both Clubs, at Middlesbrough Council and at the British Transport Police for their input and help in preparing for the match."
