TWO parked cars have been left surrounded by freshly laid tarmac during resurfacing work.

Workers decided to carry out the resurfacing of the road despite the presence of the cars, which were parked on Sadberge Street and Hovingham Street in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough.

The work started on Tuesday, June 16 and the streets affected were part of a number of roads being resurfaced in North Ormesby.

Former councillor Len Junier expressed his dismay that the resurfacing work went ahead, claiming residents were not sufficiently made aware of when the work was being carried out.

He said: “Why on earth was this allowed to happen? No official letter was sent to the residents. They had something through the door with a website link, but not everyone is able to access the internet.

“It is unbelievable that it has happened to two cars. They will have to come back and re-lay the road and by then, rain will have got in and it could crack. It’s madness.”

Councillor Lewis Young, who represents the North Ormesby ward, said: “The resurfacing work currently ongoing is part of the council’s planned maintenance and road improvement scheme and residents on the affected streets were sent letters to notify them in advance that it was due to begin.

“We can reassure all those who have had a section of their road left untarmacked that workers will be back as soon as possible to complete the works.

“We would ask that in the meantime people don’t park in the sections needing finishing so that the work can be carried out without unnecessary delays.

“Every effort is made to avoid any inconvenience for residents but inevitably when working with tarmac you will find yourself in the odd sticky situation.”
