A STATUE of legendary explorer Captain Cook is long overdue at his birthplace museum, said the chairman of the Friends of Stewart Park in Middlesbrough.

Work is now underway on a project to create a permanent incarnation of one of the town’s most famous sons following the announcement in November of a £25,000 contribution to the fund as part of the council’s capital programme proposals.

It is hoped the move will act as a catalyst to attract further external investment towards the total cost of the statue which is expected to be in the region of £160,000.

Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon said it was important to create a fitting tribute to the famous explorer in recognition of his contribution to the heritage of the town.

Recent additions to the town’s statues include an effigy of football legend Brian Clough in Albert Park and a tribute to wartime VC hero Stan Hollis is due to be unveiled near the Cenotaph later in the year.

Those behind the scheme are also planning to bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, as well as appealing for donations from local residents, groups and businesses.

Councillor Tom Mawston, Chairman of the Friends of Stewart Park, said: “A statue of Captain Cook in his birthplace at Stewart Park is long overdue, so this contribution from the capital programme is very welcome.

“The park is widely regarded as one of the jewels in Middlesbrough’s crown and would be a fitting location for such a tribute.”
