A CLAMPDOWN on motorists jumping red lights resulted in 20 people being contacted by Cleveland Police pointing out the error of their ways.

Local residents raised concerns regarding drivers going through red light traffic signals at Acklam Road at the junction with Trimdon Avenue and Lodore Grove in Middlesbrough.

As a result, officers from Coulby Newham Neighbourhood Policing Team recorded the 20 offences taking place and letters of advice were sent to those drivers. Any subsequent offences will result in prosecutions.

Neighbourhood Inspector Tina Notman said: “We have listened to the concerns raised by the local community and we are working towards improving the issues by educating those drivers who think it‘s acceptable to drive through traffic lights when they are on red.

“At peak times these junctions have a lot of schoolchildren crossing the roads and a heavy flow of traffic. Drivers are running the risk of a serious collision if they do not abide by the laws that are put in place to protect road users. Those that continue with this kind of behaviour can expect to be prosecuted.

“Drivers should be stopping when the amber light is displayed, unless it is unsafe to do so.”
