A CANDLELIT vigil was held at the weekend to honour the lives lost in the Peshawar school massacre.

The memorial in Middlesbrough town centre was in response to the terrorist attack on the army public school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar that left 145 dead, including 132 schoolchildren, and another 114 people were injured.

Pakistani expats and Teesside locals joined forces to show solidarity with the families whose children have been killed and to make a symbolic stand against global terrorism.

One of the organisers, Najabat Ramzan, said: “I'm overwhelmed by this lovely gathering. We've got some young kids here, we've got ladies here, we've got families here, who have all come to pay their tribute to this tragedy that has happened in Peshawar and all around the world.

“We condemn everything that's happening around the world. There is no place for terrorism. What we want is peace.”

The event was organised by community activists, with support from a number of organisations, including local mosques.
