THE case of a new father who died after a pub brawl as he was celebrating the birth of his baby is to be reviewed by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Benji Bolsenbroek, 23, was out in October 2013 in The Park Hotel, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, wetting his newborn baby's head, and got caught up in a large-scale disturbance. He was later pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

His partner had given birth to a baby boy, Kianey, just days before.

Police said yesterday that the CPS is reviewing the medical evidence into his death, after a new medical opinion came to light in an inquest.

At the time a police investigation found that forensic examinations did not link Mr Bolsenbroek's death with the fight in The Park Hotel.

But the Teesside Coroner adjourned an inquest into his death after a new medical opinion was provided.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “Police carried out a full investigation based on the evidence and post mortem findings. Following medical opinion provided as part of the Coroner’s process, police have asked the CPS to review the file.

“Officers are in dialogue with the family and will be providing them with updates when appropriate. Our thoughts remain with Benji’s family and friends.”

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: “In the course of the inquest into the death of Benji Bolsenbroek, the Coroner has adjourned proceedings to allow for further enquiries to be made. As a result of those enquiries we have recently received a file of evidence from Cleveland Police, the contents of which we are currently considering.”

Two weeks ago three people were found guilty of violent disorder following a trial at Teesside Crown Court, and five others were found not guilty. Eight others had previously admitted the charge.

Mr Bolsenbroek's mother, Rose, has welcomed the review.
