MAYOR of Middlesbrough Ray Mallon went to the aid of an off-duty nurse injured by a car this morning (Tuesday, October 28)

The man, who was in his 50s, was in pain after being clipped by the car on Albert Road in central Middlesbrough at about 10.55am.

A spokesman for Cleveland Fire Brigade described his injuries as minor.

Mr Mallon said: “I was driving along Albert Road and must have been just behind the incident as it happened.

“The injured man was lying in the road and clearly in considerable pain, but he was still conscious and was able to talk to me.

“We dialled 999 and waited with him until help arrived at the scene.

“I simply did what I would expect any member of the public to do in similar circumstances - and I would like to thank those members of the public who also stopped to offer assistance.”

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called at around 10:55am today to reports that a man had been injured by a car on Albert Road in Middlesbrough.

"Officers attended and established that the man had got out of his vehicle following a dispute with another driver and that the dispute had escalated.

"The man was checked by medical professionals as a precautionary measure. Police spoke to the parties involved and gave them suitable advice, with both drivers being happy with that course of action."

It is not the first time the mayor, a former policeman, has been involved in street incidents. In January this week he made a citizens arrest on a man who stole two watches from an Edinburgh jewellers. And on Remembrance Sunday in 2011 he apprehended a man who threw eggs at then MP Stuart Bell.
