AN extension to a thriving sixth form centre marks the latest multi-million pound investment in Middlesbrough College.

It has already outgrown its original building opened in 2012 so an expanded ‘MC6’ costing £3m is expected to be finished within the next few weeks.

The new wing will see the addition of a further 13 classrooms and a science laboratory and double the number of students on its roll.

Principal and chief executive Zoe Lewis said: “The opening of the new extension heralds another major milestone in the college’s development.

“The extension at MC6 is part of a multi-million pound investment programme which is allowing the college to increase student places and improve on the already first class facilities, including the creation of a £12m STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Centre of Excellence.”

Director of Niven Architects, a Darlington-based regional practice, Peter Hodges, said: “Our expertise in the area of education provision built up over the years is helping the region’s students continue their studies in some inspirational learning environments.”
