AN investigation has been launched following a blaze at an empty social club in Middlesbrough.

Fire crews spent nearly two hours tackling the fire at the empty Ayresome Quoit & Air Rifle Club in Addington Drive, Pallister Park.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 7.48pm on Tuesday (September 23).

Cleveland Fire Brigade described the incident as “serious”, as the blaze could have spread to nearby houses if it had not been put out.

Four appliances attended the incident, including two from Grangetown and one each from Middlesbrough and Marine stations.

A hydraulic platform, two jets and two thermal image cameras were also used.

Scene of crime officers at Cleveland Fire Brigade have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze.

The club closed down in April this year and the building has been unused ever since.
