A BLACKOUT across Middlesbrough town centre is aiming to open people’s eyes to art with creations built from Reliant Robins rescued from a scrap heap and discarded VHS cassettes.

‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ will see Middlesbrough transformed for one night only with outdoor film screenings, art installations and events taking place at Mima gallery, Central Library, the Cleveland Centre shopping centre and Centre Square.

It is being held on Friday, October 24, has been curated by Teesside-based artist Nicky Peacock.

Throughout the evening, Centre Square will be illuminated by artworks Stained Glass Cars which was premiered at the Lumiere Festival in Durham in 2013 and VHS R.I.P from Twist Design.

Instead of being used to demand shoppers pick up their litter, the CCTV tannoy system will be taken over with whispers as part of the sensory experience.

There will be a late night gallery opening at Mima which will won’t close until midnight.

A free outdoor screening of 20,000 Days On Earth from 9.20pm is on the Big Screen in Centre Square, delving into the artistic processes of one of music’s most mysterious figures, Nick Cave.

Before the film the official video for Antony and the Johnsons’ cover of the iconic Beyoncé song ‘Crazy in Love’ will be shown.

In Central Library’s Middlesbrough Reference Library there will be the launch of Rebecca Hall’s new book Haunted Teesside from 7pm. Copies of the book will be available on the evening for a discounted price. This is a free event, unsuitable for children under 12, and booking is essential. To reserve a place call 01642-729001.
