AN MP has returned to his hometown the day after the Scottish referendum to encourage young students to engage in politics.

Greg Clark MP, Minister of State, spoke future voters when he visited Nunthorpe Academy Sixth Form today (Friday, September 19).

During his time at the sixth form, Mr Clark spoke to a group of 80 students, including Y13 A-Level students and Y12 students who are studying Government and Politics AS Level.

He said: “It was great to talk to young people from my hometown today. Engaging with students face-to-face is a fantastic way to support their development and to help nurture their views for the future.

“The students at Nunthorpe Academy Sixth Form that I met were 18 or approaching 18; so it’s important to encourage young people to register to vote and take part in democracy.”

Student Nicole Gaffney, 18, said: “It was great to meet Greg Clark MP as it gave me a greater understanding of politics and the voting system. It’s beneficial to engage with politicians face-to-face rather than just see them on the TV and in the news.”

While 17-year-old Jack Birch said: “It’s great that the Academy organises visits from political leaders. Talking to Greg Clark MP gave me a better insight into political ideologies and the upcoming General Election.”
