POLICE have confirmed that a vehicle that was abandoned following a suspected high-speed chase on the A66 had been hit by shots from a firearm.
Detectives investigating how the Vauxhall Vivaro was found on the eastbound carriageway of the A66, near South Bank, Middlesbrough, at about 11.45pm on Friday have confirmed that the van had been shot at.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Following an examination of the scene by the Crash Investigation Unit and forensic officers, including a detailed search of the vehicle, officers have found marks on the vehicle which they believe are consistent with shots from a firearm. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances around the incident and whether there were any other vehicles involved.”
Witnesses saw two occupants leave the crashed van and it is thought one of them may have been injured.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555111.
