OLD and young alike gathered today (Sunday, September 14) to pay tribute to those who fought in the Battle of Britain 74 years ago.

A parade attended by more than 150 people in Middlesbrough marched from the South African War Memorial in Albert Park to the town's Cenotaph.

The 1869 (Middlesbrough) Squadron Air Training Corps led the parade which was followed by a service to remember all those who fought in the battle for the skies above Britain in the opening stages of the Second World War.

Andy McDonald, MP for Middlesbrough attended and took the salute. He said: "It was a great honour. It was a reflective, poignant event.

"It was also poignant to commemorate the Battle of Britain in the week of the Scottish referendum. It was the Battle of Britain, not the Battle of England. The whole country, whatever side of the border, coming together with common values."
