A ROOFTOP protest following reports of a burglar led to streets in Middlesbrough being cordoned off.

Police were called to an address in Costa Street at around 1.55pm today (Friday, August 29).

"On arrival, a man was found to have climbed onto the roof of a house and officers cordoned the immediate area off in the interests of public safety and to allow emergency services to deal with the situation effectively and safely," said a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police.

"The 20-year-old man came down from the rooftops just before 5.30pm this afternoon and he was arrested on suspicion of burglary and on suspicion of criminal damage. He faces questioning by police in due course."

No one was injured during the incident and enquiries are continuing.

"All roads were reopened by 6.15pm and police would like to thank local people for their patience and co-operation during this time," the spokeswoman added.
