CARE home residents were surprised and honoured when footballer from their local club paid them a visit.

Hartlepool United players visited Sheraton Court after one of the care home workers created a mural dedicated to the club.

Among the visitors were players Ryan Catterick, Jonathon Franks, Lewis Hawkins and Scott Harrison, who revealed the mural to residents.

Carole Thomson, Sheraton Court’s manager, said: “The lads were absolutely tremendous with the residents – such a credit to the club.”

The mural was created by care assistant, Beth Birks, who included images of the club's Victoria Park ground and mascot H’Angus, the monkey.

Mrs Thomson added: “Beth has done such an amazing job and it means that much more with it being something our residents requested for their home.”

Joe Rayment, resident of the care home and 1950s Hartlepool United player – who scored 17 goals in 65 matches – was also on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Mr Franks said: “We’re blown away by the mural. There’s so much love towards the club from the residents and we’re delighted to have been able to meet Joe and hear about his playing days as well.”

Stephen Butterworth, Sheraton Court’s managing director, added: “What a great day for the residents and staff at Sheraton Court, we know how passionate they are about their local club.”
