A POLICE officer was injured by a knife as he tried to arrest a man in Hartlepool.

Officers were called to the Spar Store in King Oswy Drive in the town at 6.45pm on Saturday night as a man drinking a bottle of wine in the store was causing a disturbance.

A spokesman for the force, said: “When police arrived he produced a knife and an officer received lacerations to his forearm from the weapon.”

Officers deployed a taser and the 36-year- old local man was arrested and is currently in police custody.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “A rapid response vehicle was sent to the scene, but no-one was transported to hospital.”

In another incident in the town on Saturday, police arrested a man as he tried to make off with a Qualcast lawnmower and pink Universal Fusion bike from the Belle Vue area.

Police in the town are now appealing for the owners of the items to get in touch with them.
