A NINE-year-old boy remains critical after being hit by a car near Hartlepool marina.

Cleveland Police said the child sustained life-threatening injuries shortly before 5.45pm on Monday after being in collision with a grey Range Rover on Marina Way.

Off-duty probationer police officers were on the scene and administered emergency First Aid before ambulance staff arrived at the scene.

The boy was taken by air-ambulance to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where his condition was described as critical.

The boy’s family were at the hospital on Monday night.

Police believe the boy was with several other young children at the time. The incident is understood to have happened near Frankie and Benny's restaurant.

It remains unclear whether the boy had been crossing the A179.

On Tuesday morning Cleveland Police said: "The nine-year-old boy who was in collision with a grey Range Rover on Marina Way, Hartlepool yesterday, remains in James Cook University Hospital in a critical condition.

"The driver of the vehicle involved is co-operating with our ongoing inquiries, however we would ask any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to come forward."
