POLICE are scouring CCTV footage as they continue their search for a motorist involved in a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a pensioner.

The 84-year-old mother and grandmother died in the car park of the Parkway Shopping Centre in Middlesbrough at 11am on Wednesday morning.

Officers believe that a dark blue or black Renault Megane with a 06 or similar registration was involved in the collision.

The vehicle was possibly a hard-top convertible and following the incident is believed to have left in the direction of the Lingfield Farm Pub on Coulby Farm Way.

Appealing for witnesses, Inspector Ed Turner, from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, said her family had been left devastated by her death.

He said: “We know the lady is local. She is a mother and a grandmother. Sadly it’s a bad time of year for anyone to lose their life.

The family are obviously traumatised by what’s gone on. We have specially trained officers who are working with the family.

“She had driven here herself. She had been doing some shopping locally and we believe she was heading back to her car to go home.

“We are continuing with enquiries into this incident and we would like to speak to the driver or anyone who has any knowledge of a dark blue or black hard-top convertible Renault Megane, possibly with a 06 registration.

“I would appeal to any drivers with dash cam footage that may have been in the area around the time of the incident to get in touch.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111 or via their website at www.crimestoppers-uk.org
