THE North-East has decided overwhelmingly to leave the EU on a momentous night for Britain.

DARLINGTON
In:24,172 (43.82%)

Charlotte Bowe at Darlington: UKIP member David Davies who has worked for this moment for two decades said after the result: "The 71 per cent turnout legitimises this. It's absolutely fantastic."

COUNTY DURHAM
In: 113,521 (42.45%)
Out: 153,877 (57.55%)

Gavin Engelbrecht at Spennymoor Leisure Centre: After a Leave supporter was seen punching the air before the official announcement it was clear which way County Durham had voted. After a resounding defeat Remain campaigners left in haste.

MIDDLESBROUGH
In: 21,181 (34.52%)
Out: 40,177 (65.48%)

STOCKTON
In: 38,433 (38.27%)
Out: 61,982 (61.73%)

Ted Strike, who represented UKIP in the Stockton South constituency in the General Election said it was a win for “David over Goliath.” The political establishment had: “not listened  to the people but we listen.”

Alex Cunningham, Labour MP for Stockton North, campaigned for ‘in.’ He said: “It’s disappointing. When I campaigned  on the doorstep the vast  majority of people telling me they were  going to vote ‘leave’ told me immigration was an issue.”

Brexit campaigners in Hambleton said people on the doorstep were worried about austerity, immigration and the future for their children. "Europe is a broken exercise" said Mayor of Northallerton, UKIP Cllr Claire Palmer.

MP Bridget Phillipson said after the result: "I am naturally disappointed but I respect the decision of the people of Sunderland."

There were happy faces among Vote Leave campaigners in Sunderland. "I feel rejuvenated," said Stephen Holt.
