A NINE-year-old boy was injured after being hit by a car involved in police chase on Tuesday night.

A green Peugeot 307 failed to stop for police on Grainger Street, Hartlepool, at about 9.35pm.

The car was pursued by police and it is believed to have hit the boy at the junction of Raby Road and Perth Street, as he crossed the road with his mother, causing minor injuries to his elbow.

The boy suffered bruising, but did not require any medical treatment.

Damage was also caused to the wall of a property, and two other vehicles on Weldeck Road, before the car finally came to a stop after becoming wedged in between a wall and a car on Zetland Road.

The 35-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving. He was also arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He remains in police custody.

The chase took place along York Road, Raby Road, Hart Lane, Murray Street, Sandringham Road, Topcliffe Street and Zetland Road, and police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
