A SERIES of training courses is to be held to enable people to boost their knowledge of bike maintenance.

The courses, which have been organised by the Hartlepool Active Travel Hub, will cover gears and chains in the first session, the second will concentrate on brakes and the third will look at frames, forks and flats.

Hartlepool Council-led scheme has been funded through the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund to promote alternatives to the car and runs in partnership with the Hartlepool Cycle Clinic at Summerhill Country Park.

Sustainable travel officer Tony Davison said: “Now that the lighter nights are approaching many people will be thinking about getting out and about on their bikes. The basic skills they will learn at these classes will enable them to check that their bikes are in good working order and to keep them in tip-top condition.”

Courses would normally cost £15 per person, but as the initiative is linked to the Hartlepool Active Travel Hub a one-off discounted price of £5 per course is being charged.

The classes take place on February 9 and 23 and March 1 from 4.30pm-6pm.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come-first served basis. They can be booked by calling 01429-284584.

The Hartlepool Cycle Clinic, which is based at Summerhill Country Park, also offers a range of bike repair and servicing options to members of the public.
