OLD Hartlepool is the latest area targeted for a day of action as part of an ongoing campaign to neighbourhoods take pride in their area.

The Respect Your Neighbourhood campaign is led by Hartlepool Borough Council but involves other key organisations including the Police and Fire Brigades.

It involves a full day of action in a particular area of town one day a month aimed at improving local neighbourhoods. Prior to the day, the key organisations involved work with the Ward Councillors and members of the public to help identify issues which need tackling.

Throughout this year, all 11 borough wards are again being made the focus of the campaign on a rotation basis.

In the Headland and Harbour council ward area various teams focussed on the area bordered by Cleveland Road to the south, Old Cemetery Road to the north and east and the railway line to the west as well as the Headland promenade and Town Moor.

Among the range of activities on the day were litter picking and sweeping, a letter drop of 150 letters and an investigation into a number of fly-tipping hotspots - including the former Steetley site, where potential evidence was passed to the police.

Councillor Marjorie James, Chair of the Council’s Neighbourhood Services Policy Committee, said: “Swift action was taken on a range of issues in the Headland and Harbour Ward, but some problems take longer to solve.

"A case in point is the trouble caused by off-road vehicles in the Central Park area, and the Council is working with the police and other partners to develop a long-term solution to the problem.”
