THE Northern Echo is marking Remembrance Sunday by creating an interactive journey through the First World War.

The new timeline on our special war website gives a daily account of how the Echo reported the First World War, bringing to life stories from the archives and providing a regional angle on the events of 100 years ago.

To view the timeline, visit thenortheastatwar.co.uk/timeline

The timeline, which was produced by NCTJ student Nick Gullon, gives details of some of the North East’s most significant events during the war, including Zeppelin raids over Teesside and the sinking of many North East built warships.

There are also firsthand accounts from soldiers fighting on the front line and a look at how political opinion on the conflict changed throughout 1915.

It also features striking photographs published in the Echo during the war.

The timeline features on The North-East At War, The Northern Echo’s online site which celebrates the centenary of the First World War, and it has been created with the latest technology so that users can roll through the months.

The website also includes our searchable database of more than 2,000 soldiers from the North-East who died during the war.
