STRETCHES of the A1 are to be closed overnight during November.

The northbound A1 will be closed from junction 69 at Gateshead Quays to junction 71 for the Metro Centre from 8pm to 6am from November 8 to 20.

The southbound A1 will be continue to be closed from junction 73 at Derwenthaugh to junction 68 for Lobley Hill until Monday, November 16.

Work will continue overnight on the central reservation between junctions 67 and 69 on the northbound carriageway and between junctions 69 and 68 on the southbound carriageway until Friday, November 20, Monday to Friday only.

Diversions will be in place and signposted.

The closures are part of the £61m A1 improvement scheme to increase the road to three lanes in both directions between Coal House and the Metro Centre.

Highways England project manager Lynne Biddles said: “We understand that there are a lot of closures on the A1 at the moment but it’s essential that this work takes place.

“This work has been brought forward from the new year in order to minimise the impact for drivers during the January sales. It will be done overnight when traffic levels are at their lowest and will be removed in time for the start of Christmas shopping.”
