BORO fans lit up Old Trafford in tribute to the hundreds of Teesside steel workers who lost their jobs following the collapse of SSI.

Amid the excitement and celebrations surrounding Middlesbrough Football Club’s defeat of Manchester United, the moving light display was a sombre reminder of the troubles back home.

In the tenth minute of the Capital One Cup fourth round match, 10,000 travelling Boro fans lit up their mobile phones and raised them in the air in a mass show of solidarity for the families affected by the SSI crisis.

More than 2,000 people lost their jobs when the Redcar steelworks closed this month, with hundreds of contractors also affected.
