COUNCIL chiefs are looking at ways of encouraging more people to use public transport or walk.

People in Hartlepool are being asked for their views on what is needed to persuade greater numbers of people to cycle, walk or use public transport.

The public appeal for ideas has been issued as part of the Hartlepool Active Travel Hub scheme which aims to promote alternatives to the car.

Sustainable Travel Officer Tony Davison said: “If we are serious about getting people to leave their cars at home and use alternative sustainable forms of travel then we need to ensure people are able to get around the town easily and safely.

“Consulting with residents in this way will enable us to compile a dossier of potential improvements which could then be used to explore potential sources of funding.

“Obviously, the Council is facing further big cuts to its budget over coming years and money is very tight. Nevertheless, there may be funding out there and having this information to hand may make it easier for us to tap into it.”

Residents are being asked to send in suggestions for improvements at specific locations rather than general comments relating to the town as a whole.

They are also being asked to report damaged, defaced or missing signs on cycle routes and footpaths around the borough.
