AN exploding fishing boat lit up Redcar's South Gare as tv camera crews captured all of the action for a detective series Vera.

Paddy's Hole was transformed into a set for the North-East based drama starring Brenda Blethyn as DCI Vera Stanhope.

Now in its sixth series, the series is based on the works of crime author Ann Cleeves, who lives in North Tyneside, and features the work of the fictional Northumberland & City Police.

The character of Vera Stanhope first appeared in the 1999 novel The Crow Trap and the sixth series of the show is due to air on ITV next year.

Filming for the series has taken place in locations all over the region, notably in the Northumberland countryside although Teesside has featured before when the Cameron's Lion Brewery was used.
