A MAN has been remanded in custody charged with causing grievous bodily harm after a police officer suffered serious facial injuries.

Jake William Wray allegedly drove away when a Cleveland Police was speaking to him, causing a number of injuries, including a broken nose, deep laceration to his face, several lost teeth and needing skin grafts.

The injured officer remains in hospital.

The 28-year-old, of Deepdale Avenue, Grove Hill, Middlesbrough, appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court today where he was charged with a section 18 offence of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was also charged with dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance.

The alleged incident involved a black Audi A4 and the on duty police officer near to the Acklam Road cemetery near Ayresome Green Lane in Middlesbrough on Monday at around 12.30pm.

Police sealed off part of the road, between Liverton Avenue and Barnaby Avenue in the West Lane area of Middlesbrough following the incident.

A 27-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and on suspicion of assault remains on police bail.

Wray, who did not enter any pleas, was remanded in custody to appear at Teesside Crown Court on September 30.
