SEAFARERS who perished were remembered in a moving ceremony.

The service at Hartlepool Marina commemorates the deaths of more than 700 sailors whose names can be found on plaques at the old Seaton High Light, a Grade II-listed, English Heritage navigation light tower built in 1838.

Rev Chris Collison, chaplain to the mission of seafarers in North Tees and Hartlepool, has been researching the names and so far has found information about more than 30 of them.

He believes the names all date from the Second World War and the decades since.

During the service, the 1st Hartlepool Sea Cadets lead a procession from Jackson's Wharf to the Seaton High Light and back and the names of the seafarers about which information is known was read out. The organisers, dignitaries and relatives of the the sailors were invited on board HMS Trincomalee, the oldest floating warship in the world.

Rev Collison said: "About 50 people attended and it was moving experience. We would love to have more information about the seafarers and if anyone knows more, it would be wonderful if they came forward."
