MINIBUS owners, volunteer drivers and residents who need transport are being sought for a scheme operated by Tees Valley Rural Community Council.

The scheme provides safe, affordable group and individual transport for residents who may have difficulty accessing local services.

A minibus ‘brokerage’ allows partner organisations to loan vehicles which are then driven by volunteers.

Meanwhile, a volunteer car scheme enables older and more vulnerable residents to access appointments, go shopping or visit relatives.

Volunteer car drivers are DBS checked, work the times that suit them and are paid at 45p per mile for each journey they make.

Mary McDermott, who co-ordinates the scheme in Darlington and Stockton, said: “We’re looking to explore the potential to provide extra community transport services in the area.

“Recent cuts to both public transport and household budgets have left many, particularly the elderly, young people and those with mobility difficulties socially isolated and unable to access services both essential and social in nature.”
