A NEW free exhibition is set to explore the mysteries and reality of pirates.

Called ‘Pirates! Fact and Fiction’, it’s at the Museum of Hartlepool at Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience until Sunday, June 28.

This touring exhibition from renowned film, television and costume specialists Pop-Up Exhibitions takes a journey through pirate history, film and literature.

Mark Simmons, Hartlepool Council’s museums manager, said: “This fascinating, fun exhibition explores one of the most swashbuckling aspects of maritime history and folklore.

“It’s an excellent way to spend a family day out this Easter, especially if you include a visit to Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience, where you can go onboard HMS Trincomalee, the oldest Royal Navy warship still afloat.”

From the Sicilian pirates of the Roman Mediterranean to the golden age of the pirates of the Caribbean, the exhibition will feature spectacular costumes from the films Pirates of the Caribbean and the live-action Peter Pan plus the television series Spartacus.

The museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm and entry is free.
