TWO teenagers trapped on rocks by the incoming tide at Redcar were rescued by lifeboat volunteers yesterday.

The two young males, from Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick, were exploring West Scar, off Redcar, and raised the alarm just after 1pm.

The tide had turned at about midday and the sea quickly cut off their route back to shore.

The Redcar RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched and the 17 and 18-year-olds were picked up 400 metresfrom the shore a few minutes later.

They were brought back to the lifeboat station, checked for injuries and given advice about safety and the sea.

Dave Cocks, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Redcar, said: ‘The tide quickly covers the escape routes back to shore. The coastguards kept the two lads on the mobile telephone right up to when the lifeboat arrived.

‘Once we got them back to the lifeboat station we gave them a quick check over for injuries and the effects of the cold water.

"Then we gave them a bit of advice about checking tide times before they next venture out onto the rocks."
