COUNCILLORS in an area of Hartlepool are launching a war on dog dirt.
The three ward councillors in the Manor House ward, Allan Barclay, Marjorie James and Stephen Akers-Belcher, have teamed up and used some of their ward budget to fund new dog fouling signs to remind owners that the area is patrolled by council enforcement officers.
The signs also encourage residents to report anyone who does not clean up after their dog.
Councillor Allan Barclay said: “It is a despicable act for dog owners not to clean up after their dogs and we do receive lots of complaints from residents who live in the ward.
“Dog dirt blights the local environment and it’s right and proper that the council adopts a strong stance to try and eradicate it."
Dog owners who do not pick up after their animals face getting a fixed penalty notice of £80 - reduced to £50 if paid within seven days. Anyone wanting to report irresponsible dog owners can call Hartlepool Council on 01429 523333.
