ENGINEERING apprentices are to spend the week with Cleveland Fire Brigade to help deliver free home fire safety visits across Teesside.

Two apprentices from TTE, a technical training education provider, will take part in the scheme all this week as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

Michael Gray, 20, from Redcar and Nathan Hunter, 20, from Hartlepool have been chosen to take part in the scheme which involves fitting smoke alarms for free and giving fire safety advice.

Cleveland Fire Brigade targets its Home Fire Safety Visits on locations where there is a higher risk of fire, including the homes of older or disabled people, but anyone living in the Cleveland area can request a free home fire safety visit.

After undertaking an induction programme at Billingham Fire Station, which included sessions on health and safety, confidentiality and home fire safety, the two apprentices will join up with Fire Brigade Advocates.

Nathan, who is a Tees Valley Production Technician apprentice sponsored by Lucite, will work alongside Margaret Yull visiting homes in Hartlepool. Michael, an electrical apprentice on placement at manufacturing company SABIC, will be paired with Lee Toogood who covers the Redcar area.

Nathan said: “This will be a new experience for me and a great opportunity to develop my skills and work with the public.”
