DRIVERS are being warned to watch out for roadworks on one of the main routes in and out of Hartlepool.

Hartlepool Council will start work on Monday (February 23) to relay the northbound section of the A689, heading into the town from Truro Drive to the Owton Lodge roundabout.

The £300,000 scheme will take about six weeks to complete, so while it is being carried out a contra-flow system will be in operation along the southbound carriageway of the same section.

The traffic lights at the Truro Drive junction will be temporarily turned off and there will be no access to the A689 from Truro Drive, Dawlish Drive and Torquay Avenue – signposted diversions will be in place.

Brendon Colarossi, the council’s principal projects engineer, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience which the work may cause but the repairs are essential as the road surface has become very worn and needs replacing.

“This follows on from similar repairs which we carried out on the southbound (heading out of town) section of this stretch of road back in 2013.

“We will do our very best to carry out the work as quickly as possible.”
