RESIDENTS of Hartlepool are being urged to make it a happy Christmas for stray dogs picked up on the town’s streets.

They are being asked to donate much-needed items for use by the kennels where dogs not immediately reclaimed by their owners are taken by Hartlepool Borough Council.

The Stray Aid Rescue Centre at Coxhoe, County Durham, says it would welcome tinned food, dental chews, Kong dog toys, dog beds and blankets.

Pillows or duvets are unsuitable because they cannot be washed, and the kennels are also unable to accept bagged food, mixer biscuits and treats as they can adversely affect dogs’ tummies.

Ali Carberry, Hartlepool Council’s Dog Warden, said: “Stray Aid Rescue Centre is a registered charity and any help that the people of Hartlepool can provide will be most welcome.

“We’ve already had a number of donations for which we are very grateful, but there’s still plenty of time for people to bring in items.”

Donations can be dropped off at reception at the Council’s offices at 1 Church Street until Christmas Eve.
