HUNDREDS of men and boys took part in the third Miles for Men run for Cancer Research today. SUN.

The Hartlepool event, inspired by the women-only Race for Life runs, is expected to once again raise thousands for Cancer Research.

Miles for Men, which has so far raised more than £84,000 for Cancer Research UK, has now been registered as a charity in its own right and is growing across the country,

This year another 5k run will be held in Sunderland on Sunday, August 3 and it's hoped others will be held in Newcastle, County Durham and across the country.

Kevin Hill, of Bishop Auckland who is involved with Miles for Men, explained that money will continue to be given to Cancer Research, but it is hoped local good causes like Hartlepool Hospice and the RVI will also benefit.

"We hope that one day it's as big as Race for Life. It's regional right now but we think it has the potential to do good across the country."

Today's race started at the sports domes in Seaton Carew and around 1,000 people took part.

The event was founded by Michael Day in memory of his late father, Michael Day Snr, who lost his battle with throat cancer in 2007, aged 67.
