A BODY pulled out of Lake Windermere today (Tuesday, April 15) is that of missing Middlesbrough man Matthew Jordan, police have confirmed.

The Teesside University student’s body was found by the Police Marine Unit in Lake Windermere, Cumbria, at about 10.20am.

Police said they were not treating the 20-year-old’s death as suspicious and that his family were being supported by officers.

Detective Inspector Furzana Nazir, of Cumbria Police, said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this tragic time.

“The response in helping to search for Matthew was tremendous. We cannot thank everyone, from family, friends to members of the public, the local community, and partner agencies, enough for their help and assistance.

“We continue to support the family at this very difficult time.”

Mr Jordan was visiting the Bowness area with three friends when he went missing. He was last seen in the early hours of March 27 after a night out.

The criminology student, from Nunthorpe, became separated from his friends, who thought he had gone to use a toilet. It was understood he had money on him but his phone was flat and that he had asked one pub to use a phone charger and for a taxi to be ordered.

At an appeal organised by Cumbria Police on April 2 his mother, Claire said: “Matthew is our world. We love you Matthew. We will find you and we will never give up looking for you.”

His body is believed to have been found near the Windermere Steamboat Museum at Rayrigg Wyke, a small bay off the eastern shore of Windermere close to the A592 on Rayrigg Road, Bowness.

About 80 people - many from the North-East - took part in large search parties in and around Windermere in a bid to find Matthew.

In recent weeks the lake has been searched by divers and boat patrols.

Police also released CCTV footage showing the last confirmed sighting of Matthew at the Stag’s Head in the town, and walking towards the Lake Road promenade.
