A SIX-YEAR-OLD has been named winner of Redcar’s Beaconbocker Glory competition.

The contest was held to mark the Beacon’s first summer as the focal point of the new-look promenade.

Seasons Café, along with Redcar and Cleveland Council, invited people to come up with a list of winning ingredients for the ultimate ice-cream sundae.

Hundreds of entries were whittled down to the best three – with those short-listed taking part in a ‘scoop- off’ at the Beacon-based café today (Wednesday).

The three finalists were Demi Burns, from Grangetown, Jason Lister, nine, from Normanby, and Mollie Head, nine, from Hemlington.

Winner Demi’s ice-cream creation will now go on sale for the summer at Seasons Café, based in the Redcar Beacon, which was recently shortlisted for The Carbuncle Cup which recognises the country’s worst designed buildings.

The youngster said she wanted her ice-cream sundae – complete with bubble gum blue ice cream and a cocktail decoration - to look like the Beacon because “it’s colourful and fun”.

The competition was open to everyone and all entrants had to do was list what flavour ice-creams, toppings and sauces they thought could be a winner.

Councillor Olwyn Peters, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, was one of the judges.

She said: “We asked people to let their imaginations run riot and that’s exactly what they did.

“The finalists all made delicious creations and we enjoyed judging their efforts but we could only choose one winner and we felt Demi’s would go down a treat with visitors.”

Fellow judge and Seasons proprietor Ian Woodcock said: “We were looking for something original, fun, and scrummy and that’s exactly what Demi came up with.”
