School takes learning out of the classroom

| WILLOW DOME: Pupils get close to nature in an outdoor classroom |
PUPILS are getting close to
nature at a school in
Guisborough.
An outdoor classroom has
been created at St Paulinus RC
Primary, complete with a living
willow dome roof. Teachers Ruth
Dadd and Rob Huntley worked
with pupils and the Groundwork
charity.
Miss Dadd, who is also the
Healthy Schools co-ordinator,
said: "The children helped us to
get funding for a living willow
dome and we also have benches
nearby which are made from
recycled plastic. We can have
lessons there now."
Andrea Bishop, environmental
education officer with
Groundwork, said the
youngsters had come up with
some good ideas.
"They worked out that one of
the biggest impacts they have is
the way parents travel to
school," she said.
"They want to encourage
mums and dads to try things like
car-sharing, cycle routes and
something called park-andstride,
where parents drive part
of the way to school and walk
the rest. It also helps cut out
congestion at the school gates."
The project was sponsored by United Utilities.
