Show helping dogs like Benji

HOME NEEDED: Benji, who is in the Tiny Paws centre, may look like a Yorkshire terrier, but is actually the size of a labrador

MANGY mutts and playful pooches are invited to a dog show with a difference today.

The event is being held to raise funds for the Tiny Paws pet rescue centre, near Guisborough, which cares for and rehomes unwanted cats and dogs.

Tiny Paws was launched four years ago by Jean Barraclough, who often has to pay vet bills and rehabilitation for the animals which land on her doorstep.

She used to work for an animal welfare organisation and said she knew there was a need for another pet rescue centre in the area.

She said: "Some animals are easier to rehome than others.

"At the moment, I have a lovely labrador with a skin allergy, and Benji, who looks like a Yorkshire terrier but is the size of a labrador, yet neither of them have been chosen.

"The ones that are overlooked sometimes look a bit unusual, but then the three-legged and one-eyed dogs go quickly because that's what people expect to see."

An animal behaviourist is on hand at the centre to advise owners once the pets have been rehomed.

Categories at the show will include best young handler, best rescue dog, scruffiest mutt, waggiest tail and most handsome.

A tombola, afternoon teas and prizes will also feature at the event, which starts at 1pm at Wilton Dog and Agility Club, South Avenue, in Dormanstown, Redcar, For more details, call 01287-619189 or 07985- 401326.
