HUNDREDS of free children’s books will be up for grabs at a Middlesbrough shopping centre tomorrow.

Hillstreet Centre has teamed up with the National Literacy Trust Hub in Middlesbrough to host the ‘Pop-Up Story Shop’ in its latest attempt to encourage more families in the region to read together.

As well as the free books being handed out, there will be story telling sessions, crafts and reading-themed activities to keep children entertained.

Allison Potter, Manager of the National Literacy Trust Hub in Middlesbrough, said: "Reading for just 10 minutes a day is enough to make difference to a child’s learning – this event will put more books into the hands of local children and inspire families to read together at home.”

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity working with schools and communities to create long-term change in areas where low levels of literacy are entrenched, intergenerational and seriously impacting on people’s lives.

In 2013 it launched the National Literacy Trust Hub in Middlesbrough, branded as the Middlesbrough Reading Campaign. A range of partners work together to promote reading and improve literacy levels in the town.

The free event is being held in a retail unit opposite Muffin Break, on Friday 16th February, and doors will open at 11am.
