A FESTIVE communal meal will see the community gather to support vulnerable people tomorrow.

Those attending a celebratory event may have the opportunity to meet Santa and his elves, who will help volunteers to spread festive cheer in Stockton.

Supporters of the Homeless and Destitute Appeal North-East will host a celebratory event at the Cultures Community Café on Dovecot Street between 1pm and 4pm.

A statement from the group thanked local businesses for donating gifts and food and said: “Volunteers will be cooking and providing a meal to those in attendance.

“Entertainment for young and old alike will also be provided – mainly, the event will be an opportunity for people from the local community to come together.”

The success of a New Year’s Meal held by the group last year inspired organisers to commit to hosting regular events.

Organiser Jolande Mace said: “Ultimately, we would like to see a community meal every quarter, organised by people from Stockton.

“We hope that these celebrations will be an opportunity for people to just come together, get to know each other, and talk about some of the things they would like to see, particularly in the area around Dovecot Street that they could participate in themselves.

“We hope that the event will celebrate the diversity of the community in the centre of Stockton and that it will bring people together as well, combating loneliness at the same time.

“Mainly, however, it's nearly Christmas, which is the season to be happy.”
