SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons has backed a shopkeeper who changed the name of his corner shop to “Morrisinghs”.

The High Street giant said it “did not mind” the cheeky new name of Jel Singh Nagra’s shop in West Allotment, North Tyneside.

The 42-year-old businessman originally called his Benton Road shop “Singhsbury’s” but was told he was facing possible court action by Sainsbury’s as the name was too similar to its own brand.

Mr Nagra, from Stockton, risked the wrath of another supermarket chain with last week’s cheeky name change.

But a spokesman for Morrisons said the company was perfectly happy with the new name for the convenience store.

“Mr Nagra and his customers obviously have good taste so we wish him well,” he said.

Mr Nagra said that his shop’s “Morrisinghs” makeover had cost £350, but that he thought it was ‘money well spent’.

The David versus Goliath story was shared tens of thousands of times on social media with supporters around the country backing the change of name.

Customer Sarah Harrison Shiels posted on the shop’s Facebook page “This guy is great!

“The sign makes me laugh every time I go past. Nice bloke too”.

Fellow shopper Christina Marie Campbell added: “This is actually mint!”

She added: “You’ll be the most famous corner shop in Britain before you know it”.

Mr Nagra, a father-of-two said: “It is just a laugh and we hope it will put West Allotment on the map”.
