TRIBUTES have been paid to a young North-East rugby player who has been killed in a road traffic accident in Germany.

Glen Cockin, 27, was on a stag weekend in Hamburg when he suffered fatal injuries in the early hours of Saturday (May 20).

A message on Stockton Ruby Club's website reads: "Whilst at the moment it seems as if there are no words which can express how we all must feel – and our immediate thoughts must be with his family – amongst his many attributes, we will remember his personal warmth, ready smile, bubbly personality, willingness to help out, and ability to banter with the best."

Many warm tributes to Mr Cockin have been posted on the club's Facebook page.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: "German police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and they are treating it as a tragic accident.

"Glen’s family is receiving practical support from the Foreign and Commonweath Office and Cleveland Police has also appointed a Family Liaison Officer to provide additional support, advice and assistance where appropriate.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with Glen’s family and friends at this very sad and difficult time."

A campaign to raise the £20,000 needed to bring Mr Cockin's body home has been launched. Any extra raised will go towards his family to help with funeral costs.
