A 23-YEAR-OLD man has this evening been arrested on suspicion of robbery at a store in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough.

Police earlier appealed for witnesses after two men, armed with sharp weapons, escaped with hundreds of pounds from the Premier store on Kings Road.

It happened at around 5.15pm yesterday (Monday, April 24).

Cleveland Police said this evening that they had arrested the 23-year-old, who is from the local area, in connection with the incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in police custody.

Earlier, police said two men, both armed with sharp implements, approached the store from the direction of Derwent Street.

After taking the cash they fled, leaving staff in the store shaken but unhurt.

The first suspect is described as a white male, in his early 20s, around 5ft 9ins tall, of medium build, wearing a green hooded top with a zip, black tracksuit bottoms with a stripe, black trainers, a dark cap, and black scarf or snood around his face.

The second suspect is described as a white male, aged in his early 20s, around 5ft 7ins tall, of slightly bigger build than the first suspect, wearing a black cap, a black scarf or snood covering his face, a blue jacket, blue jeans and black trainers.

Speaking earlier, a police spokesman said: "Officers believe that there were a number of people in the area around the time of the incident and would ask anyone who may have information to contact them."
