A SIX-year-old boy has been placed in an induced coma after being hit by a car as he walked along the A66 slip road near Middlesbrough’s Riverside stadium.

The child suffered serious head and leg injuries and was put into a medically induced coma at the roadside by a doctor-led trauma team from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

The boy was struck by a Peugeot 207 at around 4.15pm on Saturday, April 22, on the A66 eastbound carriageway, around 50 metres west of the North Ormesby slip road.

He was taken to James Cook University Hospital via road ambulance and his injuries include a fractured leg, facial injuries and cuts and grazing.

His condition has been described as serious but stable.

Cleveland and Durham Specialists Operations Unit have appealed for witnesses to come forward with details or any dashcam footage of the incident.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Officers believe that a number of motorists stopped to help at the scene.

“Those drivers who stopped have not yet spoken to police are asked to make contact via 101.

“Police would also appeal to any motorists who may have dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Jon Stokeld from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting event number 069296.”
