AN MP says a ban on smoking in cars when children are present does not go far enough and has suggested it should be extended to caravans and motorhomes.

Stockton North Labour MP Alex Cunningham began his campaign three and-a-half years ago when he introduced a ten minute rule bill in the House of Commons in an attempt to change the law.

He later co-sponsored a private members bill that was introduced in May 2012.

Regulations aimed at making such vehicles smoke free have now completed their passage through Parliament and the ban will come into force in October.

Mr Cunningham said: “I am overjoyed that the Regulations have been passed and a commencement date has been set.

“Nonetheless I look forward to the day when the minister goes one step further and recognises that smoking in caravans and motorhomes whilst serving as accommodation is almost equally as dangerous for children.”
